Spatial Computing Is the Next Platform Shift — and Most Brands Are Not Ready

Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3, and a wave of mixed reality hardware are converging toward a future where digital content lives in physical space. The brands building spatial experiences now are establishing territory that will be as consequential as having a website in 1996.

Every major platform shift in computing history — personal computers, the web, mobile — created a window of approximately five to seven years where early movers built durable advantages. The companies that launched websites in the mid-nineties owned search rankings before Google. The brands that built mobile apps in 2008 and 2009 had audiences before the App Store was crowded.

Spatial computing is at that inflection point now. The hardware is early and imperfect, but the trajectory is unambiguous. AR and VR headsets will follow the same cost curve as every prior computing device — component commoditisation, manufacturing scale, and software ecosystem development will bring the price below the psychological threshold of mass adoption within this decade.

The interaction paradigm shift is as significant as the hardware story. When digital content exists in three-dimensional space, the entire vocabulary of interface design — screens, scrolling, tapping — becomes inadequate. Spatial computing demands new design primitives: proximity, gaze, gesture, voice, and the relationship between virtual objects and physical environments. The brands and studios developing fluency in these primitives now will be the ones who shape the defaults everyone else adopts later.

The companies building in XR today are not early adopters — they are infrastructure investors. The experiences they build may not reach mass audiences immediately, but the institutional knowledge, creative libraries, and technical pipelines they develop in the process are assets that compound. When the audience arrives, they will not be starting from zero.
